ROA FINISHES SECOND AT PERRIS – LEADS POINTS INTO ARIZONA!

USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series point leader Brody Roa continued with his phenomenal season last Saturday night when he finished second in the main event at the Glenn Howard Memorial at Perris Auto Speedway. The finish was his 14th top five in 16 starts in the series this year.

Roa, who makes his home in Garden Grove, California with wife Tailor, came into the night fresh off his first ever “California Sprint Week” championship and had a 51-point lead in the season-long USAC/CRA standings. After a sixth-place finish at Calistoga Speedway on September 1st, he had five straight top-five finishes going into Saturday’s race.

Nineteen-cars were on hand Saturday for the race that honored Glenn Howard, a man who was a driver, owner, official and longtime racing businessman. Roa qualified fifth fastest in the field with a lap of 16.844. A second-place finish after starting fifth in his 10-lap heat race earned him the outside front row starting spot for the main event.

Roa, 27, slipped all the way back to third when the Kevin Winters’ green flag started the 30-lapper. Using the outside, he advanced to second on the back straightaway of the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. Four laps later, he stayed wide and swept into the lead coming off turn four.

Once out front, Roa continued to widen his advantage. By the time the race reached the 19-lap mark, he was a half straightaway in front of his closest pursuer. However, a car got upside down in turn four on that lap and the red flag halted the proceedings. Fortunately, the driver who flipped walked away from the crash, but the red flag took away the huge lead Roa had built up.

When the race restarted, Roa led one more lap before dropping back to second where he stayed for the duration. It was his fourth, second place finish in the series this year and his second runner-up showing at Perris.

“We have got to be better,” Roa told the crowd upon climbing out of the #91R after the race. “We did not need that red flag. I do not know where they were before that. We will take this, put it in the notebook and do a little better next time. We just need that little bit extra and we know how to do it. We have stumbled on some new things lately and have tried to make them work. I think we need to take a little step back and go back to what we were doing. I think we will do that when we go to Arizona and hopefully pick up a win or two there.”

The Arizona event Roa referred to is the annual “Hall of Fame Classic” this Friday and Saturday, September 28th and 29th, at Arizona Speedway in San Tan Valley. Going into the race, he has a 45-point lead in the championship standings. Fans wanting to attend the Arizona races can find the track at 47800 N. Ironwood in San Tan Valley (85140).
